Downspouts, Gutters and Your Foundation

Roof water that lands beside a slab can soak the soil there; federal building guidance says to carry it more than 5 feet away on the surface, or more than 10 feet away underground (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23). SteadyHomeHouston publishes free guides on Houston foundation repair. When quote requests open, the contractor we refer you to will pay us for each referral; you pay us nothing. Why roof runoff matters near a slab

A roof gathers rain from its whole surface and lets it out at a few corners. The U.S. Department of Energy's building science pages put it this way: "If not drained away from the house, the high volume of water coming off the roof can rapidly saturate the soil surrounding the building and wick through the foundation to the interior" (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23). Our sinking foundation guide covers soil moisture.

Downspout extensions

The DOE guidance is to connect downspouts "to piping that will carry the water to a sloping final grade farther than 5 ft. from the foundation" (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23). The Foundation Performance Association, a Houston-based nonprofit professional organization, asks the same thing in its owner's checklist, whether roof storm water drains 5 feet away, and lists splash blocks as one way water leaves a downspout (FPA-SC-20-0, Owner's Guide to a Better Foundation, 2016, checked 2026-10-17).

Buried downspout lines

When water goes underground instead, DOE says to carry it "to an underground catchment system farther than 10 ft. from the foundation and that is not connected with the foundation drain system" (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23). Washington State University's Clark County, Washington extension guide (not Houston guidance) notes that buried downspouts can be tied into a French drain, and that sending downspouts into dry wells "can help facilitate infiltration of water into the surrounding soil" (WSU Extension, Clark County, Improving Drainage, university extension page, checked 2026-10-19). Not engineering advice; ask a licensed professional engineer (TBPELS roster, checked 2026-10-19).

Signs drainage is part of the problem

Our signs page lists the warning signs, and its root barriers and drainage section covers day-to-day drainage habits. A professional engineer can tell you whether roof water is a factor during a foundation inspection. Watering the soil during drought is a separate subject on our foundation watering page.

FAQ

How far should a downspout carry water from the house?

DOE's building science guidance says to a sloping grade farther than 5 feet from the foundation, or to a buried catchment farther than 10 feet out (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23).

Do splash blocks count as drainage?

The Foundation Performance Association's owner's checklist names splash blocks as one discharge method, next to pipes and swales (FPA-SC-20-0, Owner's Guide to a Better Foundation, 2016, checked 2026-10-17). Not engineering advice; ask a licensed professional engineer (TBPELS roster, checked 2026-10-19).

Can a downspout feed a French drain?

Washington State University's Clark County, Washington extension guide describes roof water collected in gutters and sent through buried downspouts into a French drain (WSU Extension, Clark County, Improving Drainage, university extension page, checked 2026-10-19). Our French drain page has the rest.

Should a buried downspout line connect to the foundation drain?

No, according to DOE: the underground catchment it describes is one "that is not connected with the foundation drain system" (U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education: Foundation Drain, Gutters, Downspouts, checked 2026-10-23).
